A well-known voice of the BBC’s Final Score football results programme is set to inspire sports journalists of the future after striking a deal with the University of Northampton.

Marc Webber has joined the University’s Journalism and Media team as Senior Lecturer – and in addition to helping to deliver the digital journalism offering, he’ll also be preparing the BA Sports Multimedia Journalism course, which launches in September.

With more than two decades’ experience in traditional and digital media journalism, Marc has worked for industry giants the BBC, ITV.com and the Press Association, and still works as a live matchday football reporter at weekends for Final Score and BBC 5 Live.

Starting as a Saturday sports reporter at Red Dragon Radio, Marc made his digital journalism debut in 1999, when as producer of audio bulletins for Financial Times Radio, someone from the paper news desk asked if he fancied ‘sticking the audio on this web thing we’ve got called FT.com’.

His financial news experience led him to be Declan Curry’s producer on BBC Breakfast, before it was back to a long stretch on digital innovation in 2005, first as launch Duty Editor of PA’s online video service and then on to be assistant editor at The Sun online and Head of Content at ITV.com.

He most recently helped podcasting company AudioBoom win Best Digital Audio Service at the UK radio industry awards.

Matt Walsh, Subject Leader for Journalism, Media and Performance, said: “Marc is a brilliant journalist with a track record of digital innovation. His passion for news and sport will help inspire students on the Multimedia Journalism degree.”
