Whatever reasons you have, make sure you know what to expect on your Online MBA!
Once you have decided to do an MBA, and whether you want to do it online , or traditionally, it is time to start shopping around for a school.
Don't be too hasty when you invest your time and money in online education.
Like all investments, you have to conduct some research before you invest your time and money in your personal education. Some things you need to research are:
- What do online business schools usually offer?
- Which schools offer more flexibility?
- Which schools are more prestigious? - for example, some schools organize a major event as a place for students to come over and make friends or contacts that come from various backgrounds.
- Which schools offer internship programs?
- Which schools offer scholarships?
Applying for a postgraduate program at a business school can be a daunting task.
Different business schools and universities have different prerequisites. The more prestigious schools will have tougher prerequisites, due to the large amount of applications they receive each year. One of the main criterion is that you have to have an undergraduate degree and be a graduate from a recognized institution. Other schools that are not so high in their rankings are not so rigid about what basic degree you have, and often invite variety. Some schools may require you to have a certain amount of relevant work experience (here relevant implies work experience related to the intended field of study), usually up to a minimum of three years.
When applying, potential schools will look at your academic background, ranging from what subjects you took and how many credits you can handle per semester. If you are from a science or engineering background, taking a finance, economics or accounting subject could work to your advantage. Your extra-curricular activities will also be under scrutiny, holding positions in clubs, organizing events and doing community work reflects that you have leadership qualities and interpersonal skills.
An important question: Do I need to sit an entrance exam?
Some schools require you to sit an entrance exam before they accept your application. The best advice here is to go with the flow. It may be difficult to get back into study mode if you have been away from your books for too long, so give yourself ample time to adjust. Entrance exams can help transition you into an full blown online post graduate course.
Once accepted, dedication, hard work, a lot of perseverance and a little time management is needed. Allot a specific time for you to study and revise. Prioritize your 'class' time and treat your online MBA course as a valuable investment; this will help remind you why you are doing it in the first place.
